URL to project/event starting point:
"Teach Robots to Read Magazines: Softalk Edition" is a Citizen Science and Citizen History Project hosted by FactMiners.org and The Softalk Apple Project.
Project/event directions for participation:
For Global Collaboration Day, we invite students and teachers from around the world to drop by our "Ground-Truth TOC-Mapping Party" at Zooniverse. Zooniverse is a Citizen Science crowdsourcing platform. We have developed an easy workflow process for folks to help us map the TOC pages, or Table of Contents pages, of Softalk, the historic microcomputer magazine published from 1980-84. In addition to helping us teach robots to read magazines, students and teachers will be introduced to historic document preservation, image analysis, and optical character recognition (OCR). Core team members of FactMiners and Softalk Apple Project will be available all day through the Zooniverse Talk channel and on Twitter via #globaled15. We are especially interested in meeting students and teachers interested in developing class projects that explore early microcomputer history using the resources of The Softalk Apple Project and our collection housed at the Internet Archive.
